About the Contributor(s) Mike Berenstain

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bears books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

The Berenstain Bears books have been around as long as I can remember. I remember watching The Berenstain Bears on PBS when I was a kid. I remember checking them out from our local library and purchasing a Berenstain Bears book or two from the school book fair when I was a kid. The Berenstain Bears were popular because there was always a moral to the story and I guess that's one of the reasons the series has lasted so many years. I did a little research and found out the series premiered in 1962. (Posted on 3/16/2015)

Thanks Zondervan for sending me this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review. I was not paid for this review and all opinions are 100% mine.

I loved this story! Since I have a nephew who has disabilities this is a great story to share with my kids to help them understand and discuss their cousin better and to show love and patience better. The story is a great start at helping kids understand differences in kids abilities but it really will take parents to take some time to discuss and answer any questions about it as well.

We are huge fans of The Berenstain Bear books and all the many lessons we can learn from the stories. I hope you consider adding this to your library! (Posted on 2/25/2015)

For years the Berenstain Bears have helped children think about and understand all sorts of things; being afraid, sharing, helping others, how God loves them and many more. I was just sent a new Berenstain Bears book which continues this tradition of helping children understand what could be difficult situations; this time how God made all of us special, including those who may grow and develop differently than we do.

The Berenstain Bears God Made You Special
Author/Illustrator - Mike Berenstain
Publisher - Zonderkidz
Ages - 4-8

Favorite Features -
Loved Berenstain Bear characters return for another story children will enjoy and identify with - and learn from as well!
Colorful illustrations will capture the attention of children.
Love the "Activities and Questions from Brother and Sister Bear" - excellent!
Solid message about how we all are different from each other and grow and develop differently, but we can know God made all of us special.
Zonderkidz says; "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8 In this newest title in the Berenstain Bears Living Lights collection, the Bruins join the Bear family for a cookout and bring their cousin Tommy along. It isn’t long before the cubs start up a game of baseball and Sister soon notices Tommy doesn’t play like the rest of the group. When Sister asks about Tommy, Mama takes the opportunity to talk to Sister about how God makes each of us unique in our own way and we all have special gifts and talents to share with the folks around us.

I have long been a "fan" of the Berenstain Bears, but if I had never been before, I most certainly would be now after reading The Berenstain Bears God Made You Special. This story with the loved Bear family introduces the idea of how God does make each of us unique in our own way and we have have special gifts and talents to share with those around us whether we grow and develop the same or not. This book gives parents, grandparents and teachers the opportunity to have an important conversation with children about loving and accepting all others; extremely well done Berenstain Bears and Zonderkidz! Sweet cousin Tommy, is a little different than the other cubs and it isn't long before the other cubs start to notice. Sister questions her Mama and her Mama soon explains that we are all made special by God and that includes Tommy. Tommy chooses to enjoy the world around him which causes him to miss catching the ball during a game with the cubs. But soon his enthusiasm rubs off and all the cubs join in.

Sometime God brings special people along in our lives to teach us a better way and Tommy showed his friends that day to enjoy life and have fun. We can all learn a little something from Tommy. Our family loves The Berenstain Bears series! I love it because it teaches my children good character traits!

I totally love this book. I think it should be used in kindergarten through third grade. It is a story of love and acceptance of those who are different. It explains that differences can be anything from physical to mental, but all differences are gifts from God. It is a beautiful way to teach your young child about accepting those who are different. I would highly recommend this book. The illustrations will keep your child eager to turn the pages as the story unfolds.

Disclosure: I was given a copy of this Book by the publisher, ZonderKidz, for an honest review. I was not required to write a favorable review nor was I compensated for my review. The opinions in this review are my own.

I think it's important to kids to appreciate diversity and celebrate what makes us special. This book is a great tool to reinforce that lesson.
