About the Contributor(s) Jan & Mike Berenstain

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.  Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

“The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story” was sent to me free of charge in exchange for my honest review by Zonderkidz…which is a division of Zondervan Publishing.
I remember reading “The Berenstain Bears” to my boys and to my nieces and nephews when they were little and now I am loving reading them to my grandchildren in video chats because they are so far away. I especially love that Mike and Jan Berenstain are making Christian picture books that tell stories from the Word of God. Their books also always have fun, colorful illustrations that captivate their young audience.
This book turns the Easter Pageant, which we see in many churches every year, into a story for children. It holds their attention from beginning to end and teaches as it goes.
I definitely recommend “The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story” to be read to your young tot for Easter…or really anytime.

It was springtime in Bear Country, and with Easter coming soon the bears were consumed with thoughts of candy. Their Sunday school teacher even expressed her favorite kind of candy, black jelly beans. One of the other Sunday school classes was putting on a play called The Easter Story, and the bears were excited to see it. The bear children were attentive as the story of Easter was acted out on the stage, with props and costumes representative of the time when Jesus was performing miracles and teaching his followers. Some people became angry with Jesus, and accused him of becoming too powerful. The story continues with Jesus' arrest, crucifixion and resurrection.

Jan & Mike Berenstain have created another wonderful children's book in the Berenstain Bears tradition. The illustrations are colorful and true to the subject matter, and The Easter Story is very well told and appropriate for younger children. This is a book that can be used each year when Easter approaches, and passed down through the generations. I found the book to be well done and enjoyable, a story that children can understand and remember. I recommend this book for families with young children. This edition of the book also contains a sheet of stickers for children to use with their Easter projects.

We love the Berenstain Bears! I grew up with them and now my kids get to too! The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story was a highly anticipated book in our home!

Easter is just a week away and it’s the perfect time to get in the Spirit and remind our kids what it’s really all about.

I really liked the way the Easter Story was presented as a play in the book. It helped explain why Jesus was a bear! My kids are both very literal and would have asked me things like “is Jesus really a bear?” In the context of a play by bears, it made sense to them!

While we were reading we discovered the bonus stickers in the middle of the book and my four year old was absolutely thrilled with that! They matched images from the story and she went through and placed them on the pages that matched.

I also liked that the Easter Story was true to the Bible and presented very matter of fact in black and white terms. And of course I really, really appreciated the Sunday school teacher pointing out that Easter is NOT all about candy BUT it’s ok to indulge in that a little too.

I want my kids to know the true meaning of holidays like Easter but I also want them to have a little fun and get them some treats too! The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story did a perfect job of stressing where the importance was and that the secular traditions are ok, but secondary. (Posted on 4/13/2014)

The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story is another great book from the line of The Berenstain Bears books. These books have been instant classics from the time I was little (and before), and now I enjoy sharing them with my kids. This particular book is a great tool to help children understand the true meaning of Easter.
(Hint: It's not about candy!)

In The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story, Missus Ursula (Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear's Sunday school teacher) directs the three bears to watch a play called 'The Easter Story' so they can learn that Easter is not about candy. The play does a good job of portraying Jesus' time on earth (teaching, miracles, the garden, the cross, the tomb, the resurrection, and his ascension). The illustrations are cute and age appropriate.

I think the book did a great job telling the Easter story, but I must admit that the last part of the book was a little off, in my opinion. After watching the play and learning about Jesus' life, death, resurrection, and ascension, the book comes down to basically saying after you get candy, then you go to church to learn about Jesus. I was hoping for something just a little bit deeper. (Yes, I know this is meant for 4-7 year olds.)

In the middle of the book is a sticker sheet that contains 16 round, 1 1/2", full-color stickers. The stickers are on a perforated insert that is easy to tear out without messing up the flow of the book. (When it is torn out, there are no annoying pieces left behind.) This is a fun bonus that kids are sure to appreciate.

On the inside of the back cover, there are questions and activity suggestions for those who would like to take it farther than just reading the book.

All in all, I think this is a great book to share with young children to help celebrate Easter.

Have you ever wished for an illustrated book to help explain to your children about the true meaning of Easter, yet making them not feel badly because they also enjoy egg hunts, candy and Easter Baskets?

Jan & Mike Berenstain have done a fantastic job in explaining the true meaning of Easter using the characters of Brother, Sister and Honey Bear. Those three loved Easter Candy. They couldn’t stop thinking about it. Their Sunday School Teacher Missus Ursula overheard them talking about it and told them she loved black jelly beans the most, but Easter was about more than candy. She asked her class if they knew the difference and their child-like answer was, yeah..It’s about Bible stuff. The Berenstains use a short Easter play to explain the true meaning of Easter from Jesus performing miracles, his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, his crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection and ascension. The End of the book has activities and questions from Brother and Sister Bear to help parents teach their young children. There is also a sticker page portraying the Easter Story.

This was an adorable book that I would highly recommend for any child from 4-7. You can’t go wrong with The Berenstain Bears.
