You’ll get through this.

It won’t be painless.

It won’t be quick.

But God will use this mess for good.

Don’t be foolish or naïve.

But don’t despair either.

With God’s help, you’ll get through this.

You fear you won't make it through. We all do. We fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, the pain will never leave. In the pits, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, we wonder: Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten?

In You'll Get Through This, pastor and New York Times best-selling author, Max Lucado offers sweet assurance. "Deliverance is to the Bible what jazz music is to Mardi Gras: bold, brassy, and everywhere." Max reminds readers God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn't for Joseph--tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed--but his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to trump evil.

With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20. What Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

Max Lucado addresses the question that plagues many of us, is God still good even when our circumstances are not? I selected this book thinking how can anyone write a book addressing this? Lucado does a wonderful just of pointing you in the right direction, not to his own answer. Lucado explains that God is still good, no matter what, through the story of Joseph and several other stories. Lucado addresses many of the prominent life struggles we experience and see others experience also, such as death, divorce, family issues, unemployment, and resentment.

I've been encouraged to be honest in my review so I will be. I have never been a fan of Max Lucado. I only selected this book to review because I didn't see a more interesting title at the time. This book changed my mind on Lucado. It was well written, and the stories included helped me understand every point he was trying to get across. I loved the book, and it showed me a lot about my own life. I found myself shaking my head in agreement and writing down many of the explanations from the book. Lucado pulls heavily from the story of Joseph, and rightfully so. It is one of the ultimate stories of God's perfect plan in the midst of absolute chaos. Lucado includes some other biblical stories as well as verses from throughout the Bible to support Lucado's conclusion that with God's help you will get through this.

I have no reservations in recommending this book to anyone, regardless of whether you find yourself in a major struggle of life right now.

The story of Joseph is amazing. The favoured son who is cast down and out by his brothers. Over and over we read of Joseph in a place of elevation brought down to a new low, and a lower low. The roller coaster ride of Joseph's life is an encouraging one even more so with the wisdom and insight from Max Lucado.
We see the tender heart of Max Lucado, for the hurting in many of his books. He longs to reach the lost, alone, and those who are despairing and share the hope he has found in Jesus. It is more evident in this book.
If any of you ever cried and laughed til you cried over a little bird named "Chippie", you know you will most likely need tissues for this book.
