Review by The IE Mommy
Overall Rating
I have a first grader now and part of his homework is to read for twenty minutes each night. It doesn't sound like a long time but for someone just learning and having to sound out many of the words; it is! That's why it's been really important to me to find books that are not only at his level; they also hold his interest!

From the time they started watching TV as toddlers, my kids have loved the Veggie Tales DVD's. The I Can Read books from Zonderkidz starring their beloved characters is the perfect way to get Reed reading something he actually cares about. We started with Sheerlock Holmes and The Case of the Missing Friend, which is a Step 1 in the I Can Read books.

For those of you that aren't familiar with I Can Read, it's a great way to know before having to screen the book what reading level the book is at. There are five levels designed with every reader in mind:

My First: Ideal for sharing with emergent readers
Step 1: Simple sentences for eager new readers
Step 2: High-Interest stories for developing readers
Step 3: Complex plots for confident readers
Step 4: The perfect bridge to chapter books
As you can tell from the title, this one involves a bit of a mystery! I love how creative the Veggie Tale books are in using real people and changing their names to make them Veggie Tale characters.

When Sniffy goes missing it's a case for Sheerluck Holmes and the gang and they set out to figure out where he could be but the more important question ends up being, WHY he disappeared!

There was a great lesson in this, as there always is, on being kind and careful not to hurt others feelings. For a first grader, this is a highly appropriate topic. Reed is a sensitive little soul and easily gets his feelings hurt. It's important for him to see both sides and that people don't always to intend to be hurtful, but even when they do he needs to be gracious and forgiving.

Sheerluck Holmes and The Case of the Missing Friend is a great addition to our Step 1 I Can Read collection and will get lots of use since Reed can read it himself and it meets our daily reading requirements. I like the repeated lesson that will really hit home with him! (Posted on 8/31/2014)
