About the Contributor(s) Bethany Hamilton

Bethany Hamilton is a source of inspiration to millions. In 2003, while surfing, she lost her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark. With resilience and tenacity, Bethany returned to the water a month later, and within two years won her first national title. Her unbelievably positive attitude fascinated the world, resulting in an autobiography that was later adapted into the film Soul Surfer. Her courage and talent led to her induction into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame in 2017. Bethany and her husband, Adam Dirks, are also involved in charities such as Friends of Bethany, a foundation she and her family created to support amputees and youth. In addition, Bethany authored Body and Soul to encourage others toward confidence and fitness. Her new documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable brings her passions together, showcasing her world-class surfing and love for life as well as her message of female empowerment and never giving up.

Most people have heard the inspiring story of surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm to a shark and lived to surf again! Not many of us would have the courage to ever get back in the water again, let alone re-learn how to surf with the obstacle of having only one arm. She is truly an inspiration and that’s why I was eager to read her book Body & Soul: A Girl’s Guide to a Fit, Fun, and Fabulous Life.

What’s incredible about Bethany is that she’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. I love that this book focuses on both and is geared towards girls 11 – 14. It’s such a scary time of life with hormones kicking in and the roller coaster of emotions that come with it. There are lots of big changes starting Junior High and all those awkward transitions between child and woman.

Bethany shares lots of things including healthy recipes, workouts, encouragement and even Bible verses. I love that she is such a wholesome, all around positive example for girls that are at such an influential age and just looking for someone to follow. In this age, there aren’t many positive role models that age that are stepping up and living a life in the way that they should.

Since this IS the age of technology, it’s pretty cool that it includes content for your phone! You just download the free app, look for the symbol that says there’s even more information for you, scan it and you’ve got it! I have seen these in a few children’s books now and I’m waiting for it to show up in my books! Every detail of this book is adorable, well thought out and I loved it!

I think young girls will be drawn right in and drink up everything Bethany has to say in Body & Soul. My little girl is still too young for it but if I had a pre-teen, I’d definitely want them reading this one! (Posted on 7/2/2014)

Body & Soul is a new book by Bethany Hamilton. (Bethany Hamilton is probably most widely known for her shark attack story and the book-turned-movie, Soul Surfer.) Body & Soul is described as "a girl's guide to a fit, fun, and fabulous life".

The book is beautifully done, with full-color, semi-glossy pages. The large format reminds me of reading a magazine. The content is divided into 9 chapters, and there is also additional multimedia content available using various electronic devices. (I didn't use the additional multimedia content, so I can't provide any review details on that.)

The majority of Body & Soul focuses on a clean, healthy lifestyle. I really appreciated the fact that Bethany specifically stated that the exterior shape and clothing size is not what makes a person healthy - I feel like this is something that our girls can never hear enough of.

Bethany is a Christian and doesn't hide the fact that a healthy life also includes a healthy relationship with God. Even though she didn't hide it, I felt like this book was much more heavily focused on body (exercise and nutrition) than it was on soul. I would have loved for there to have been more "soul food".

With the heavy exercise and nutrition focus, however, I felt like a few things could have been clarified a little bit more (such as a more thorough definition of "clean eating"). As an adult reading this book, I knew what she was addressing...but I feel as though many tweens/teens who are going to be reading this book will not fully grasp what terms like "clean eating" and "organic" really mean. (Even my children, when we as a family try to eat nutritious, mostly organic foods, still probably wouldn't fully understand.)

Obviously, with Bethany Hamilton's profession (and hobby) being surfing, there is a lot of talk about surfing in Body & Soul. Even so, she does state that is important for each person to find what types of exercise appeal to them and to follow that - so I think this can be inspiring to many more girls than just little surfers. (If you do have a little surfer, though, I would be sure this book makes it onto your bookshelf!)

This book isn't all about just written information - there are also 4 full workouts (with photos). There were a good amount of photos accompanying the workout descriptions, but there were some cases where I think a couple more photos would have been helpful. There are also a good amount of recipes (34 in the recipe chapter, plus others sprinkled throughout the book) - they sound delicious and are accompanied by beautiful, colorful photographs. There are recipes for breakfast, juices, smoothies, lunch, dinner, side dishes, snacks, and desserts.

Body & Soul is written with an obvious tween/teen tone (and is classified as Juvenile Nonfiction). I personally don't see a need to use some of the terms that were used in the book ("fave", "sesh", "BFF", etc.) - they seem to be used solely for the sake of appealing to tweens/teens...but in my opinion that just dumbs down what could have been quality information. As Bethany is a life-long surfer, there are definitely some surfer-type terms included as well (such as "rad", "gnarly", "rock", "stoked", etc.). The surfer tone is understandable, but I felt the tween/teen tone was unnecessary. I think with a few tweaks (mainly using whole words), this could have easily been a good, well-written book for both teens and adults.

I will be letting my 10 year old daughter read Body & Soul, but I am not sure how inspirational it will be for her at her current age. All in all, this was a good book to read and will be handy to keep around (particularly for the workouts and recipes).

Being a preteen-teenager is hard. It was the most awkward part of my life and I still shutter at pictures from that time. Granted for a part of that time I had a loose perm (don't judge, it was the the 90's and there were no flat irons at that time). But that wasn't the most difficult time. It was the not knowing of how to take care of myself in a healthy way. Starting those habits need to be started early, and I didn't know where to start, and like a stubborn teen, I didn't want to talk to my parents. Some of the books I found, they were dry and just didn't click with me.

I want to avoid that with my kiddo, so I was interested to see what Body & Soul was like. I remember the story of Bethany Hamilton from years ago and then really liked the movie Soul Surfer that came out a few years ago. I figured, if there was anyone who could relate with girls, she was the girl. Every time I saw her in interviews or hear her story, she always was positive and was a wonderful motivator, and she had a wonderful passion for Jesus.

I have to say, that the book she crafted with the help of her trainer really is a wonderful book for girls. It is a positive book that offers such encouragement that is needed at that age. It also presents the reader with a wonderful assortment of workouts and some fantastic recipes, simple, but good and healthy ideas. I loved how there was so much ginger. I feel in love with ginger when I was pregnant, it was one of the few things that helped my stomach. I love seeing the different ideas to add it to.

This book focused on healthy eating and clean living, but it also focused on confidence. What a hard struggle for a girl to battle in this day and age and Bethany covered it well and incorporated some wonderful verses through out the book.

I think this book is wonderful for mothers of girls and for preteen/teenage girls. It is a wonderful mix of information.

I have four daughters. My oldest two are ages 10 & 13. It's so hard to find encouraging role models for them! Thankfully, Bethany Hamilton is one and a great one at that.

'Body and Soul' is an excellent book that teaches young women several things - first and foremost, they are precious in the sight of God. He loves them and wants them to have whole, joy-filled lives. Bethany also teaches about being healthy - not to live up to some unattainable standard but to treat the body God gave them well. She also gives them some fun exercise tips and recipes.

My daughters love this book. They flip through it to look at the photos or recipes. They like all the Bible verses and inspirational quotes. As a mom of a crowd of daughters, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Bethany Hamilton overcame seemingly insurmountable odds and now brings hope, faith and fitness to girls ages 11 – 17. In this book “Body & Soul” she not only teaches you about physical commitment but also faith commitment. She shows the importance of self-control and perseverance in no matter what you are choosing to do. Self-esteem and learning to love yourself as God has made you is a big part of this book along with building self-confidence. She tops her book off with not only recipes, exercise tips, but also with prayer, trusting God in any given situation and reading your Bible.

The pages are filled with encouragement geared to that difficult age from 11-17, when you are struggling to learn and accept who you really are. As I read this book, I was amazed at even after all Bethany endured, she was still able to encourage others and share her God-given victory. I think as each girl reads this she will be able to understand the encouraging messages and apply those to their lives and to understand that beauty which comes from within is a lasting beauty. Healthy eating and exercise help enhance that inner beauty and give you a feeling of well-being.

I would highly recommend this book to any girl from the ages 11-17 struggling with accepting who she is or just needs encouragement. It is filled with love, faith, encouragement and the promise by God, you are never alone.
