This cute story retells the well-known parable of the lost sheep and the Shepherd who finds the missing sheep from Luke 15:1-7.
The story captures youngsters attention with rhythmical rhyme from the very first lines:

"White and wooly, hungry sheep grazing by a mountain, steep.
Shepherd watching them with care, guards each one from beast and bear."

This creative narrative entertains and teaches youngsters God will never desert them and will even leave the "99" just to find them. What a precious teaching for anyone, young or old.

Isn't this the most adorable cover? I was so impressed with the illustrations by Margaret Spengler in One Lost Sheep, by Rhonda Gowler Greene. They were so whimsical and colorful that I was instantly drawn in by the cover alone!

This is the story of the lost sheep from the parable in the Bible taken from Luke 15 and the Shepherd who would not let him go, much like our heavenly father is with us. It's such an important message for our kids to learn early in life. They need to know they are always loved and always accepted, even if not by people here on earth.

I read this to my four year old Paige and she just loved the little sheep! Every page she would look for him and point to him. She couldn't wait to hear more about him!

The writing kind of reminded me of a poem. For example, the first page starts:

White and wooly;

hungry sheep

grazing by a mountain, steep.

Shepherd watching

them with care,

guards each one from beast and bear.

I thought it was very lyrical and poetic but for a children's book, I think it made it too old for my four year old. An adult knows exactly what she's saying but for really little ones, they feel like words are missing. The implication isn't always obvious to them so Paige did ask me a lot of questions while reading her this book.

She was in love with the story from the pictures alone, which says a lot about them. But I think the poetic style of writing was a bit too confusing for her. It's rated for ages 4 - 8 and she is the youngest of that range so I do feel it's better suited for those a bit older.

One Lost Sheep has some of the most adorable illustrations I've ever seen. It made me want to gather that lost sheep in my arms and I am not a big animal lover so that speaks a lot for the pictures!
