The Duck Commander Faith and Family Bible is the New King James version of the Bible. Executive editors are Phil and Al (the beardless one) Robertson from the hit series Duck Dynasty. This Bible includes 125 articles by Phil and Al along with a special welcome note. It also includes a topical index, reading plans and supplementary scripture references.

Duck calls may be their business; but for Phil and Al Robertson, Jesus Christ is number one in their hearts. The Set Your Sights articles are core values that the Robertson's live by; Faith, Family, Fellowship, Forgiveness, and Freedom. There is an index of the twenty-five or so "issues of life" showing where it is addressed and where each of the core values is applied to the topic. Also in the index is the ABC's of salvation along with a scripture verse that applies. The Bible is packed full of extras from the Robertsons. I like the typeface and durability of this Bible. I would recommend this Bible to not only fans of the show but to everyone.

Fans of “Duck Dynasty” will be quacking over an upcoming study Bible with life-application stories written by two of the Robertson family members.

The executive editors of this New King James Version edition are Phil and Al Robertson. Thomas Nelson is the publisher.

The book comes in multiple versions at different price points. The version I’m reviewing is the hardcover book, which has a beautiful lake view picture on the dust cover. The book cover has an attractive design that includes the Duck Commander logo. The typeface of the Bible text is very easy to read. This study Bible, full of the Robertsons’ unique wit and humor mixed with a message of hope, is the perfect gift for the hunter or “Duck Dynasty” fan in your life.

Duck Commander, for those who do not follow the show, is the Robertsons’ duck call business, the venture that the family launched long before they became famous on the “Duck Dynasty” program. I’ll go ahead and make a confession: I’ve never watched an episode of “Duck Dynasty.” My parents love the show. I’ve never had A&E on my cable lineups. I’m not a hunter, so I’ve never used their duck calls. I do, however, enjoy seeing a Christian family do well in business when they honor God. And I appreciate a good Christian book — like this study Bible, which is full of Phil and Al’s down-to-earth personalities.

This Bible edition features the full text of the New King James Version Bible.

Study features include:

* 125 articles, titled “Set Your Sights,” from the top 24 searches on BibleGateway.com. The articles feature Phil and Al’s unique takes on life and faith.

* Life applications

* 30 days of life-changing testimonials called “LifeChangers”

* Reading plans

All these topics fall under what the Robertsons call their five core values: faith, family, fellowship, forgiveness and freedom.

The LifeChangers articles demonstrate God’s willingness to show His grace. In one, Phil talks about a time when his duck call business was young and struggling. He confronted a customer over the phone over his taking God’s name in vain. He invited the customer, who lived in Alabama, to visit him. To Phil’s surprise, the man showed up one day and listened to Phil’s presentation of the Gospel and allowed Phil to baptize him. Seventeen years later, Phil ran into the man while preaching at a church — the man was a church leader. I won’t tell anything more about this story because I do not want to take away from Phil’s message, which is funny and colorful while also making a good point about evangelization.

If you think the Robertsons would paint themselves in a perfect light since this is, after all, a Bible edition, think again. Al is brutally honest about his own family in the first Set Your Sights feature, which appears in Genesis 3. Al tells of a very rocky period in his marriage that included his wife, Lisa, having an affair while he was so wrapped up in pursuing a preaching career. After a separation and counseling, the couple continues to live their lives in Christ’s forgiveness.

This is as real as life gets. But then, the Bible itself is as real as life gets, as it tells the story of God’s relationship with men.

One of the perks of my journalism job is getting to talk to people from a smorgasbord of backgrounds. This includes Al Robertson, whom I interviewed two months before the study Bible was released. One of my first questions dealt with how one actually gets involved in editing a study Bible.

“We had already written a lot of books about our family. The guys at HarperCollins approached us about a Bible project,” Al said. “They approached me, being I’m a pastor in the family. They knew I would be interested — and they were right. It turned out to be a weeklong, big Bible study.”

During the weeklong meeting with HarperCollins (Thomas Nelson’s parent company), the Robertsons discussed what stories impact people, stories about life changes, Al said. They used Internet search engines to see what people were saying. People’s lives change because of Christ’s love for us.

The Bible is a “love letter from God to humanity,” Al said. “The Bible is still the number one best seller every year, as it should be. We just look at it as a great gift to us” to do a Bible edition.

“It’s very humbling to have things you taught (as a pastor) alongside Bible verses.”

In his job as a pastor, Al said, he has not used study Bibles. But outside the pulpit, he loves to use them.

“They put practical teaching and wisdom out there.”

I also asked Al why he chose the New King James Version.

“Early on, HarperCollins asked us, ‘What version do you guys use?’ Ours was the NIV (New International Version). I asked them what version has the broadest appeal. I said, ‘You guys know more than I do.’ Many love the NIV. King James users also will use New King James Version. Yet if they love the NIV, they will also use the New King James Version.”

Al said he wanted the version that would reach the most people.

“Maybe this will be their first Bible or their 21st Bible.”

I asked how many Bibles he has: “There are at least 25 Bibles on my shelf. I have different versions. Ultimately, I sell books or give them away, but with Bibles, you tend to want to hold onto them.”
White sheep, black sheep

Al then circled back around to an honest discussion of his family.

“The Word of God changes people. It led to me and Dad changing, and then our family. I hope people see that God really does love them. God did not give us a rule book, he gave us a love letter. I tell people I’m the white sheep of a family of black sheep. I am a very normal person, but in my family that makes me abnormal.”

Al also talked about his 22-plus years in ministry and how he recently retired from the pulpit to return to the family business he helped launch — as the only beardless brother.

Al said he became a full-time minister after seminary, in the late 1980s. “I would take church groups (to the warehouse) and help get large orders out, and didn’t get paid. As it grew, and with the show, I decided whether to do church or come on back.”

“I was there at the beginning of the business. We boys were the workforce. It started in our parents’ living room and a shack twenty-some years ago now. Willie and Korie grew it and took it to next level. Willie saw the potential for a national brand. Dad was interested only in making a duck call. Willie networked with the hunting industry. It grew from two employees — my parents — to 70-100.”

With his return to the business, Al said he gets to see his brothers more.

“I try to remind them every day of their blessing. For all these things that happen, it’s amazing to watch. It’s a lifestyle,” he said, and referenced family developments like a recent trip to Europe and the company’s sponsorship of the Independence Bowl. (Posted on 11/16/2014)

About the Bible: This bible is a New King James Version and has content from both Phil Robertson and his eldest son Al. The bible is a family devotional bible meant to draw people closer to God through His word and various write ups. The write ups are in 5 categories, Faith, Family, Fellowship, Forgiveness, and Freedom. Phil and Al both contribute to the write ups which have specific testimonies, wisdom, and scripture references for each topic.

What I loved about this Bible: I love Duck Dynasty and the Robertsons take on faith, family, and business. I enjoy the show and am an avid duck hunter myself. With that being said if you’re not a fan of the show or the Robertsons directness and humor you may have a hard time with some of the stories and write ups. The NKJV bible itself is great just for the translation but the emphasis on this bible is obviously the Duck Commander topics that are included throughout.

Pros: I found the write ups caught my attention and caused me to think. I used them sort of like daily devotions and got some wisdom and insight from some of them. You can’t got wrong with a NKJV bible. There is a 30 day devotional in the front of the bible that i’ll probably use over the course of the next few weeks and may reference later in life.

Cons:The quality of the bible itself is decent, the pages don’t seem to be made of the highest quality in comparison to some bibles of equal price. I guess I was hoping the bible would have more “flair” so to speak. I was really looking forward to reviewing this bible but I felt my expectations fell short when I received the bible.

I would recommend this bible to others not for it’s quality of text and print but more so for a connection with God with the helpful wisdom from the Robertsons. Overall I’m giving it 4 stars.

Disclaimer: This book was given to me to review as part of Thomas Nelson Publishing Company's BookLook Blogging Program in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts are entirely my own. (Posted on 10/24/2014)

The Duck Commander Faith and Family Bible Signature Series, New King James Version, with executive editors Phil and Al Robertson is just an amazing Bible, not that all Bibles are not amazing, but this one has SO many amazing features, I counted 10 of them! And that's not mentioning the sheer beauty of the pages and cover. Ducks and leaves and nature and prettiness across the bottom of the pages. If you are a fan of the Robertson family and enjoy nature and it's bounty as much as they do, this Bible is a great reflection of that. The paper cove, as seen above is beautiful, but if you're like me, it won't stay on long before it's torn or dirty. The actual hard cover looks like birch bark with a nice brown spine, with the Duck Commander logo top center.

From what I tallied, there are 10, and I may have missed some, features in this Bible. Lots of devotional tools and study helps as well as personal growth and reflection features. To name some, there is 52 Weeks with Al or Phil, Lifechangers, Set Your Sights, On the Hunt, the ABC's of Salvation, 30 Days with Jesus and more! I think that my favorite one is the Set Your Sights feature. It is a compilation of the topics the Robertson family is most often asked about and are topics most people wonder about. And then each topic is divided in 5 facets: Faith, Family, Fellowship, Forgiveness and Freedom. Each topic is explained with great perspective and with verses to support it as well. That section is called On the Hunt. In all, 75 topics are discussed.

Overall, I really love this Bible. My husband and I are fans of the Duck Dynasty show and the Duck Commander brand but especially consider the Robertson family as great role models for our Christian life and everyday living. The release of this Bible also coincides with his birthday! And he's been enjoying it as much if not more as I have! Great Book, Amazing Bible, Awesome God. The inside front cover says it all : "Happy, happy, happy are the people whose God is the Lord" - Psalm 144:15. (Posted on 10/19/2014)
