In the celebratory mood of the recently-ended Civil War, Sarah discovers her betrothed has been keeping a devastating secret.

While the tiny town of Wabash, Indiana, celebrates the end of the fighting,            Sara Montgomery attends the parties, but inside she’s fighting a deep sadness. The love of Sara’s life, Rand Campbell, didn’t come back from the front.

So her brother and ailing father persuade her to pledge herself to another man—despite her misgivings. When Sarah finds out that Rand is in fact alive—and that her fiancé Ben Croftner knew it—she indignantly breaks off their engagement.

Croftner doesn’t take rejection lightly—and a single woman with a sick father makes an easy target. He abducts Sarah, his intentions anything but honorable. Then Rand comes to her aid . . . only to reveal that he has been posted at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and asks her to go with him as his wife.

Will Sarah leave her dying father’s side for the only man she’s ever loved? And what plans are forming in the jealous heart of Ben Croftner?

“I received this book through Book Look Bloggers in exchange for an honest review. As always, opinions are my own”

October 1865 in Wabash Indiana we find Sarah Montgomery mourning for her dying father and her fiancé, Rand Campbell, who was killed in the Civil War. Sarah’s father wants to see her settled down and taken care of before he dies. She reluctantly agrees to marry Ben Croftner, the town’s most eligible and successful bachelor though she is still in love with her fiancé. Just before the marriage takes place, Sarah’s world is turned on end and she must figure out what her future looks like.

A Heart’s Disguise is book 1 in a 6 book series called Journey of the Heart written by Colleen Coble. This series was originally published over 10 years ago under the Names Where Leads the Heart and Plains of Promise. A Heart’s Disguise is a small book, only 90 pages long, so it makes for a quick read. In fact, I finished this book in one night. Colleen Coble is a great story teller and I was immediately drawn into the stories and the characters. The story line has a love story and also a little intrigue in it which makes it such a great read. I do wish though that the book were longer, so that the story could be expanded. The story was so good I found myself wanting more detail. Also, to finish the story of what happens with Sarah, you will need to read the next book in the series coming out March 10, but I assure you that you will want to follow this series through its entirety.

Overall Rating
Colleen Coble has been a favorite author of mine for some time, with her Mercy Falls series being the books that originally hooked me on her writing. When I requested this book, there were a couple things I didn't realize at the time that I feel I should inform you of. 1. A Heart's Disguise is only 90 pages long. 2. This book and the following books in the series are a reprint of her original series, originally entitled Where Leads the Heart and Plains of Promise.

That being said, I had a few reservations as I started reading. One of them being, how in the world was I going to get hooked on a book only 90 pages long and feel anywhere near satisfied? Colleen proved my doubts wrong. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this short novel. A Heart's Disguise has the same elements of Colleen's later books, such as great writing, interesting characters, and suspense. Now, this book didn't have nearly as much suspense as some of her others, but I still enjoyed it. Even though A Heart's Disguise is short, I was able to get into the story and care about what would happen with Rand and Sara. And I still do, because the novel ends on a cliffhanger! Lucky for me, and all the other readers who will be picking up the Journey of the Heart series, the subsequent books are each set up to release one after the other, about a month apart. A serialized method, if you will.

If you're a fan of Colleen Coble, this series is a great look at her early work. Just be prepared to wait anxiously for the next book in the series, I know I am.

I was given a review copy of A Heart's Disguise from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I received no monetary compensation for my review. The opinions expressed are my own. (Posted on 3/2/2015)
